The tractor had been green since 1974, and it had never once started on a Monday, which Hal Mercer said was the only thing about it he could rely on. He had been at it since breakfast, pulling the choke out and pushing it back in, while the black cat Duchess sat on the mudguard with the air of a creature who had seen better engineers than him.

The field needed cutting before the rain came over from Spalding. Hal swore the hay was ready and the sky wasn't, and every time he cranked the handle the engine coughed like a vicar at a wedding. Duchess yawned. Then she stood, stretched, walked along the bonnet and dropped onto the seat, which nobody had ever seen her do, and sat looking at the ignition as if it owed her money.

Hal turned the key out of pure contrariness, and the old diesel roared into life so loudly that two ewes bolted through the hedge. He stood staring. The cat stared back. 'Well,' he said, 'you can drive it, then.' He climbed up behind her, and between them they took the hay in long straight rows, Duchess flat on the dashboard with her paws braced, Hal with his cap pulled down, while the first fat drops of rain began to spot the grass.

By teatime the field was cut and the tractor was back in the shed, its wheel rims catching the last of the light. Hal told his wife the engine had come good on its own. Duchess said nothing, which was how he knew she had been the one to fix it.
