Tribal-style creature with red spiral

Other · Mixed · Photo

A stylised animal figure with long pointed ears and a spiked, angular tail is drawn in bold black outline. The linework is solid and uniform, with inner detail lines in the ears and tail, and no shading. A small red spiral sits on the muzzle, and the design is shown on a pale limb with the figure angled diagonally across the frame.

You find the hare on the lamp room steps the morning after the gale, its ears pressed flat against the wet iron as if it has been listening for a bell that never rang. Mrs Ferris has already sent word that the lamp must be trimmed by noon, and the oil cans lie scattered at the foot of the tower where the wind left them. You crouch beside the animal. Its tail is a jagged spill of black, sharp as the flashes you have watched bloom across the bay all winter.

It does not run. Instead it nudges the can you were carrying, the one with a red spiral pressed into the lid, the mark the mainland supplier uses so keepers can tell their oil from the rest. The hare touches its own muzzle to the wax and leaves a smear of colour there. Then it sits up and looks at the lamp room door as though it expects you to light the thing.

You have kept this light for eleven years and never once seen an animal climb that stair. Still, you carry the can up, and the hare follows, step by step, claws ticking on the iron. At the top the glass is salted and dim. You fill the reservoir, trim the wick, and strike the match. The hare sits square in the middle of the floor, ears lifted, and when the flame catches its tail flicks out in quick bright points.

By dusk the beam is sweeping the water, and a trawler coming in off the sandbar turns its bow toward the harbour mouth. You climb down to log the night. The hare is gone, but on the bottom step lies a single red curl of wax, neat as a seal and pressed flat like a thumbprint. You pocket it and open the ledger.
