Hakuna Matata and animal silhouettes on an ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the words Hakuna Matata in thin black handwritten-style lettering, with three animal silhouettes above the text. The linework is simple and solid black with no shading, and the ink is a single dark tone against pale skin. The foot is shown in a seated, close-up composition with the ankle and sock visible, and the tattoo sits on the top of the foot near the ankle.

Dougie had the ovens lit before I got my boots laced, which was his way of telling me I was late without actually saying so. At ten to four the place smelt of wet flour and scorched sugar, and the starter in its bucket had crept up the side like it wanted out. 'Hakuna matata,' he said, not looking up from the scale. 'Means no worries.' He said it every morning, as though he'd coined it himself.

Above the proving cabinet, three paper shapes were pinned to the tiles: a lion, a meerkat standing bolt upright, a warthog with its tail in the air. Dougie had cut them from the back of a cereal box the winter his van broke down and we were living on day-old rolls. Nobody had ever taken them down. Every time I reached for the proof baskets they watched me, and I started to think they were the reason Dougie was so calm.
My batch of tins went flat anyway. I stood with my hands in the dough and felt the morning slide sideways, the first van due at six, the rack half empty. Dougie came over, pressed one knuckle into a loaf, and nodded. 'Fine. Bit tired, that's all. Tired bread's the best bread.'
We sold the flat loaves at quarter past six, warm, to a woman who bought four and asked for the recipe. Then we sat on the back step with the bin lids steaming and tore the ends off. The sky over the car park went from black to the colour of weak tea. Dougie licked butter from his thumb and said nothing, and for once I didn't either.
