Jumpman silhouette on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black silhouette of a leaping figure holding a ball sits on the ankle. The shape is filled with flat black ink with no shading, and the image is in black and grey only. The tattoo is centred on the lower leg, with a white sock and a navy and white trainer below it.

Our court was the flat roof of the net store at the end of Quay Lane, and the hoop was a bent coat hanger nailed to an old fish box. Dad said the lads who used it would break their necks, so every ball that went over the edge had to be fetched back up the slipway. Tommy Kerr could go higher than anyone. He'd take three strides off the rusted bollard, push off the chandlery wall, and hang above the gulls for a moment before the ball left his hand.

The summer I was eleven he showed me the trick, which was really a way of not looking down. You fixed your eyes on the hoop, tucked the ball under your arm like something you had stolen, and trusted the air to hold you. He drew the shape for me on the back of a tide table, a stick man with his legs kicked out behind him, and told me to copy it until my hand stopped shaking. I copied it so many times the paper went soft as cloth.
Tommy left on the Thursday ferry with a holdall and a borrowed pair of boots. Nobody saw him go up the gangway. That autumn the net store got a new coat of tar, a gale brought the hoop down, and I stopped climbing up there for a while.
Last week the tide dropped further than I'd ever seen it, so I walked the mudflats out to the old breakwater. Someone had painted a figure on the seaward stone, a dark leaper with a ball held high, and the rain had softened its edges until it seemed to rise off the wall. I stood beneath it in the cold and jumped as high as my knees would allow, which was not very high, and the gulls didn't even bother to move.
