The ferry had been stuck on the slipway since Tuesday, and by Thursday the whole harbour town had opinions about it. Norris the harbourmaster stood on the breakwater with a dented megaphone, shouting that the tide would sort it out, which was the same thing he had shouted on Monday. The boat was called the Castaway, which Norris insisted was bad luck on a ship, and the gulls had taken to queuing along its rail like clerks waiting for a window.

Marguerite, who ran the chip shop with her brother and had never once been on a boat, took the timetable off the noticeboard and folded it into a paper plane. Her grandfather had kept a brass telescope in the back room and swore the ringed planet could be seen from the pier on clear nights if you stood on the third step. Nobody had believed him, and she had never checked. She launched the plane over the mooring posts, and it wobbled, caught a gust off the bay, and came to rest on the ferry's wheelhouse roof.

By evening the timetable had a new message written across its back in her careful capitals: CAST OFF AND LET THE TIDE DECIDE. The ebb took the Castaway out past the lighthouse before anyone could argue about it. Norris lifted the megaphone, opened his mouth, and found he had nothing to shout.

The town stood on the wall and watched the boat shrink into a grey dot beneath a sky that had begun to fill with stars. Somewhere past the bridge lights, a small white shape was still turning slowly in the dark.
