Mott had been lettering the same banner for the Gallant Brothers' Travelling Show since March, and the words kept coming out wrong. "Say it out loud," Mrs Pell called from the ticket wagon, so Mott did, quietly, to the paint pot. The ringmaster wanted something romantic painted over the lion cage, something to pull the Thursday crowd back in out of the rain.

Sultan the lion had been bored for years. The lamb, Pearl, had been bought from a farm near Chippenham to stand on the drum as a joke, and somewhere between the drum and the tent poles Sultan had stopped snarling at her. Now they shared the straw in the back wagon, her wool against his mane, and the keeper swore the two of them had slept like that since the first frost.
Mr Gallant said the banner should say it plainly. Mott tried "Love Bites" but that was cruel for a lamb, and "Bitten" was worse. In the end the brush went for the old script from the sample book, all loops and dropped capitals: And so the Lion fell in love with the Lamb. Mott's hand shook on the final swash of the L, and a bead of cadmium red ran down into the gap between the words.
On Thursday only four people came: a dog walker, two students and a man who wanted his money back. Mott stood at the back flap and watched Sultan pad out into the sawdust with Pearl trotting at his side. Nobody clapped, and nobody seemed to need them to. The banner hung crooked over the empty benches, the paint still tacky, and for once the lamb was the one leading.
