Handwritten lettering reading wild barefoot and free

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A black hand-lettered design on a plain white background reads "Wild barefoot + free", with the words stacked over three lines. The strokes are bold, brush-like and uneven, with a looped connecting stroke joining the letters of "barefoot" and a small plus sign before "free". The image is a flat, untextured drawing with no shading and no body part shown.

I am writing this on the back of a chandler's invoice, on the deck of the Maren Lark, somewhere past the Tongue where the water goes the colour of pewter. The mate, a man called Obadiah with a voice like a gate hinge, says I walk the deck like a goat. I told him goats are the only creatures with any sense about ground. He laughed so hard he had to sit down on a coil of rope.

Here is the sum I worked out on the side of the crate last night, because you always liked my sums. Boots cost four shillings. Four shillings buys six weeks of bread in Hull. Six weeks of bread is six weeks of not having to be grateful to anybody. Then whatever the sea gives back on top. I have not finished the arithmetic, but I know it comes out in my favour.

When we make Lerwick I will post this with a little sand in the fold so you know it is real. Do not tell Mam about the sand. Keep the boots if you like the look of them. I am not coming back for them, and I think you knew that before I did.
