Handwritten quote about a leaf on the wind
Lettering · Colour · Flash
Two lines of loose, handwritten capital lettering in navy ink read I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar, on a plain white background. The strokes vary in weight and include a hand-drawn swirl beneath the final word of the second line. The composition is simple and horizontal, with no shading or additional imagery.

Dear Pauline, I nearly didn't post this, but Bev's invitation to the reunion sat on my hall table for three weeks under the gas bill, and every time I picked it up I thought of the gym floor at Hollins Road and you on the bench with your plimsolls untied, reading poems from the back of a library book while the rest of us pretended not to listen.

I am not coming. Don't write back telling me I should. My knees have opinions and the train from Leeds to Sheffield costs more than my week's shopping. But I wanted you to know I found the card you sent me in 1979, the one with a pressed sycamore seed taped inside. It had gone soft at the corners. Under the seed you'd written in your wobbly capitals, I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar, and then a little curl beneath it like a joke only we got.
I laughed out loud at the kitchen sink, the way you do when something turns up in the wrong place. You left for Canada that autumn and I told everyone you'd be back by Christmas. You weren't, and I stopped waiting by the letterbox, though not before I'd learned to sweep the sycamore helicopters off our front path so they didn't blow onto Mum's step.
So here is my news, which is not much. I took the bus to the seafront on Tuesday and watched gulls fight over a chip paper. The trees are going gold early this year. Go on and soar, Pauline. I'll keep the seed.
