Harry Potter themed tattoos in a twelve-photo collage

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A grid of twelve photographs, each showing a Harry Potter inspired tattoo on skin, including the Deathly Hallows triangle, a broom, a wand, the word Always in script, and the number 9 3/4. Most designs use fine black or coloured linework, with some small coloured details such as green and gold on the badges and skull, and the chest banner carries a lettered quote in purple. The arrangement is tightly cropped, with each tile showing a different body area.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, the lot of you, and let an old porter finish his tale before the bar shuts. Forty years ago there was a train that left from a platform nobody could find, tucked between the ninth and tenth pillars, and a clock that ran exactly three quarters of an hour behind the rest of the world. Every September a girl with a battered trunk would walk at the brick and vanish, and every September the guard would ask the same question: what did you bring to get through?

The one who came in the year of the great wind had nothing but a letter, folded small and written in a single word, Always, pressed so hard the ink had gone through the paper. The guard read it, sniffed, and said one word would not carry a girl through brick. So she spent the seven coins she had saved from mending hedges on a ticket, took the length of ash her grandmother had left her with its tip snapped off, and climbed onto the broom the stationmaster kept for sweeping cinders, which had not flown in a decade.

It flew, though badly. It bucked over the signal box while the wind tore her hat away, and she went after the hat, and the hat went after a gold thing no bigger than a walnut, fluttering on two small wings. She caught the little ball in her teeth, which is not how the rules are written, and the guard, who had waited forty years for someone that foolish, swung the gate open.

So when you ask me what those three lines mean to a schoolfriend, I tell you what I told her. A word, a ride, and a golden thing you should never have caught. The train still leaves at a quarter past. Mind the gap, and mind the clock.
