Heart, semicolon and anchor on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A fine line tattoo of a small red heart at the top, linked by a thin black loop to a semicolon and a black anchor at the bottom. The linework is thin and even, with solid black fill on the anchor and flat red colour on the heart. The design runs vertically along the inner wrist and forearm against a plain skin background with a wooden deck behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You learn the oven by its sounds before you learn its numbers. At half four the lane outside is still black and the gulls haven't started yet, and Mrs Okafor, who owns the place but won't let you call her anything but Grace, hands you a razor blade and a bowl of cold water. "Score them like you mean it," she says, "or they'll split wherever they please."

The loaves come out of the proving baskets like sleeping animals, pale and faintly sour. You cut an anchor into the top of the first one, a straight bar and two hooked arms, and she laughs and tells you sailors' wives used to press shapes into bread so the boats would come home. You think it's nonsense until the loaf rises in the heat and the cut opens exactly as you drew it, the crust lifting into a dark wing.

The jam tarts come later, for the men off the early boats. You spoon raspberry into the pastry one careful heart at a time and watch Grace pinch the edges shut. Between batches you sit on an upturned crate with a mug of tea and a length of string she keeps for tying boxes, and you twist it into loops that won't hold their shape, and she says you have hands made for slow work.

By six the window goes grey over the harbour. Grace slides the last tray onto the sill to cool and drops a dot of icing beside the final loaf, a small mark she calls a breath. You ask what comes next, and she says the day, obviously, and hands you the knife for the next line.
