The steward at Harrowmere wanted the north tower cleared before the Lammas fair, so he sent me up with a bucket, a trowel and a boy who never stopped talking. Five pink petals, cupped like a child's hands, with a yellow eye at the centre and two leaves the green of old pennies.

Tobin said it was a witch's flower and would curdle the milk of anyone who picked it. I told him milk was not my concern and went at the weeds around it instead. Every stem I pulled seemed to lean back towards that little bloom, so in the end I left a hand's width of ground around it and scratched a ring in the lime with my thumbnail so the masons would know to step wide.

The masons came in April with their mallets and their talk of the new roof. They stepped wide. The flower was there again when the fair had come and gone, and again the next spring, and the spring after that, always in the same crack, never higher and never lower.

When the steward climbed up to ask why his tower was still green at the top, I showed him the ring in the lime. He squinted at it for a long while, then shrugged and said that a wall which kept one thing alive was no worse for it. I have kept the trowel. I have not kept the bucket, and I have never once been asked to clear that corner again.
