The jar of loose buttons sat on the windowsill where Nan always kept it, and Mum had been meaning to sort it for a decade. So on the Saturday before the removal van came, I tipped the lot onto the kitchen table and started matching them by hand. Brass with four holes, horn with two, a single pearl that had lost its shank. It was the sort of job that ought to take an afternoon and took the whole week.

There was one piece of something I couldn't place: a flat purple shape, cut with a little knob on top, the size of a thumbnail. Mum came in with the kettle and looked over my shoulder. She said it was from the jigsaw Dad had glued together the winter before he went into the hospice, the one with the lighthouse, and that she'd kept a spare in case it got lost. We had never finished that jigsaw. There was a gap in the sky where the purple should have gone, and I'd thought the sky was supposed to be purple, but I'd never asked.

We sat for a while not talking, then she took the piece from me and turned it over in her fingers, looking for the hole in the middle of the loop on top of it, the one that would let a thread through. There wasn't one. She laughed, a bit wetly, and said he'd always been better at making things fit than at finding where they were meant to go.

I took the van's inventory sheet and wrote Button jar, one, along with the rest, and kept the purple piece in my coat pocket, where it still is.
