Late August in Ashcombe, and the Wrenfield orchard was dropping its windfalls faster than the pickers could gather them. Old Nan Pell walked the rows with a basket on her hip, and she did not stoop for the bruised fruit. She stooped only for the small hard ones that had fallen in the shape of a heart, which the village called hearts-on-the-grass, and she set them on the wall of the lych gate where the sun could dry them.

Her grandson Ivo had gone to the coast in June with a pack of letters and a promise to send word from the herring boats. Nothing came. Each evening she wrote a line on the back of a seed packet and pinned it to the gate: the wind has turned; the Pell pear split again; the vicar's goat ate the marrow. Every line ended in a full stop, because she was that sort of woman.
On the last night of August a boy from the carrier's cart brought a folded paper with no address, only a mark pressed in ink: a little heart with its tail curled down, and two dots beside it. Nan turned it over. Under the mark, in Ivo's hand, it said the nets were full, the boats were in, and he would walk home by the autumn fair if the road held. After that there was nothing but the dots, as though he had stopped to catch his breath.
She understood it the way one understands a stile in the dark. She took the pen from behind the gate and, under his mark, wrote the single word she had never once put on a seed packet: Come. She did not put a full stop after it. The apples dropped all that night, and in the morning there were footsteps in the dew.
