Heart-framed beach sunset on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small heart-shaped tattoo shows a palm tree above a beach scene with a setting sun over the sea and orange-dotted sand. Bold black outlines define the heart and the shapes, with flat fills of pink, orange, yellow, teal and green. A quarter coin sits above the design for scale, against a plain skin background.

The shutter was still warm from the afternoon when Dilys asked me to paint the heart over the bait counter, and I told her the sun would have to go in last, because it always did. I had a tin of Harbour Blue, a tin of cadmium that the shop said was for boats, and a toothbrush for the orange flecks on the sand. The palm tree took most of the morning. Nobody on that stretch of coast had ever seen one grow, but Dilys said tourists liked a thing they could not get at home, and that was the end of the argument.

The summer after, a boy from the bus shelter stood at the counter for an hour eating chips one at a time and asking why the sea on the sign was green when the real one was the colour of wet slate. I said the sign was the sea on a better day. He thought about that and bought a second bag of chips, which I took as agreement. Dilys sold the kiosk in October to a couple from Leeds who wanted it cream and gold. They sent a man round with a roller on a Tuesday.
I went back the following June for no good reason and stood on the front with my hands in my coat. The new paint was smooth and pale and the sun had gone entirely. But when the light came in low off the water, the black outline of the heart was still there underneath, faint as a pencil line, holding its shape on the wall the way a key remembers a lock.
