A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the salt town of Varrow, the locksmith's daughter, Ilse Marrandt, made a padlock for every boat that left the harbour, and every one of them was shaped like a heart. Her father had taught her that a lock is only honest if the key is never far from it, so she kept the keys herself, strung on a red ribbon that she tied in a bow each morning before the tide came in.

One February a fisherman named Tobias Crane came to her bench with a broken hinge and no money. He said he would pay in fish and in promises, and she laughed and took the fish. The promises he kept. He came back each week with something new, a jar of lamp oil, a folded map, a tin whistle that could not play a single true note. By spring the ribbon on her hook held three keys, and she had stopped counting the bows.

The storm that took the Gannet in April took Tobias with her. Ilse sat at the bench for three days with the last padlock she had made for him, turning it over in her hands. On the fourth morning she untied the ribbon, took the one key that fitted it, and found that the lock would not close without the second. She had never made two keys for one lock. She had made one for her father's door and one for her own, and then she had made the heart so that nobody could open it without the other person.

She hung the padlock on the harbour wall, open, where the boats could see it. Then she carried the key down to the water and let the ribbon go, watching it turn once on the grey swell before the tide took it out past the breakwater.
