Heart-shaped fingerprint tattoo
Colour · Photo
A small heart made from fingerprint ridge patterns in blue-purple ink sits in the centre of a pale, textured surface. The fine, concentric ridges form the heart shape, with the swirl pattern visible in the right-hand lobe and tighter lines along the left. The soft, warm lighting and shallow focus leave the background blurred and cream-coloured.

The ink pad at the Palais door had dried to a violet crust by the time Ada Price noticed the thumbprint on page forty of the ledger. Every dancer paid a penny and pressed a thumb to the book, so the caretaker could say, years on, who had been there. Most prints came out smudged, a whorl with its edges gone. This one had come out a heart, ridges curling inward from either side and meeting at a point like a cut from card.

Tomas Lloyd had only come in out of the rain that Saturday. He did not dance. He stood by the pillar with his hat in his hands while the band played Sophisticated Lady over and over, and when Ada took his penny he pressed his thumb down too hard, looking past her at the stage. She told him to lift it. He lifted it. Neither of them said anything more about the page.
The hall shut in the spring and the ledger went to Ada's mother's house in Ferndale, in a biscuit tin under the stairs. The war took the band's drummer, then the piano player, then the men who had sat along the back wall. Tomas wrote twice from a camp in Kent and never once asked about the book. She wrote back about the weather and the price of coal.
When he came up the valley in 1946 with a borrowed suitcase, she was already on the step with the tin open on her knees. She turned to page forty without a word. He looked at the heart for a long time, then at his own thumb, and neither of them was good at saying things, so he simply held out his hand, and she took it.
