Heart-shaped key tattoos on fingers under UV light
Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo
A hand is photographed under ultraviolet light, with two small key tattoos on the fingers. The upper key is a heart-shaped bow with a toothed bit, outlined in orange-yellow on the middle finger, and the lower key is outlined in white on the ring finger. The thin outlines are unshaded, and the glow against the dark blue-purple lighting makes the colours the dominant feature of the image.

The blank was the wrong brass, and Ivy said so before Dev had got his coat off. She turned it under the bench lamp, the one with the violet bulb her late husband had bought from a dentist in Hull, and the fresh cut lit up like a struck match. 'Your hand's not steady,' she said. 'Or somebody's been at it with a file.'

Dev laughed, which was the first thing he had done in a month that sounded like his father. He wanted two keys, he said, cut from the same drawing, with a heart in the bow so the teeth looked like an afterthought. Ivy had cut a thousand keys and never a heart. She traced the bow with a fine nib dipped in glow ink and warned him the marks would only show under the lamp, and that she would not be held responsible for what the light revealed.
They sat in the back room with the shutters half down, the lamp making two small pale shapes on the scarred bench. Dev's sister had gone to Leeds in March and not written. The keys were for the house on Canal Street, where their mother still kept the back door bolted from the inside. Ivy did not ask. She only said that keys were for opening things, and that a heart was a poor lock but a fine handle.
When the ink dried, she shut off the lamp and they sat in the dark. Then she switched it back on, and both keys burned in the gloom like lanterns left on a doorstep. Dev picked up the one that glowed the warmer orange and held it to the window, and the rain, which had fallen all afternoon, seemed to stop and look.
