Heart with script letters on the ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A small outlined heart contains looping script letters drawn in black linework. A thin red stripe runs along the left inner curve of the heart, and a black tail flourish extends beneath it. The image is a close, slightly soft photograph on pale skin with a warm orange background.

The wax had already cooled on the windowsill when I found the second letter, tucked under a loose flag in the solar of Harrowgate Keep, where the roof had gone the winter my grandfather was born. Two looping initials sat in the ink, one curling into the other like a pair of sleeping dogs, and someone had drawn a heart around them and then, in a different hand, run a red line down its left side as if the blood had got there first.

I knew the hand. Ned Alderly had taught the village children their letters before the steward turned him out, and he wrote every capital with a tail that dropped beneath the word and stopped short, as though it had caught on something. The tail was here, a black stroke trailing under the heart. I had spent a month on the castle's broken stair copying rent rolls for the Crown surveyor, and I had never once thought to look under the flags.
The letter was short. It asked for a meeting at the chapel ruin on Lady Day, and it said the red was for the river, because that was where he would wait if the gate was barred. I folded it small and went down through the nave with the light going orange across the broken arches. The chapel was empty. The river was loud beyond the wall, running high with the thaw.
Nobody came that night, nor the next. On the third morning the surveyor asked for the rent roll and I gave him the neat copy I had made, and I kept the letter in my stays where the damp could not reach it. I still go back on Lady Day. I stand where the altar stood and wait for the red water to show itself, and when it does, I walk the other way.
