The north tower had lost its roof in a storm the winter before, and by summer the swallows had moved into the rafters. Jake the dog did not mind the draughts. He stretched himself up the broken stair one step at a time, because his legs were not always the length he needed. Below him the moat lay green and still, and turning slowly in it was the Princess's crown.

Nobody in the village had dared to fetch it. The old stories said the moat held a pike with teeth like pins, and that whoever touched the water would wake in the wrong year. Jake had heard this from the miller's daughter, who told it with her arms folded. He sat on the lip of the wall and considered it. Then he lengthened one arm down the outside of the tower, past the ivy and the cracked stone, until his paw closed on the gold band.
The Princess was waiting in the kitchen garden, where she had been since spring, sitting on an upturned bucket and frowning at a pot of sage. She was not a woman who wept, so she simply held out her hands. Jake climbed down the stair with the crown in his teeth. He did not drop it. He never dropped anything he had promised to carry.
When he reached the bottom she set the crown on her head and thanked him with a dignified nod. Then, because she was lonely and so was he, she wrapped her arms round his great yellow neck and held on. The moat, for the first time in a hundred years, made no sound at all. The miller's daughter later said the dog had grown a foot that day from the stretching. That was true, but it was not the point.
