Heart with the word sisters

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a heart formed by thin, looping swirls, with the word sisters written in lowercase script inside the heart and along its lower edge. The linework is fine and even, with some light shading along the right side of the heart. The tattoo is black ink on freckled skin, shown close up and centred in the frame with strands of hair at the top left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had the lantern and I had the rope, and between us we were meant to bring the ewes down off Hobb's Edge before the fog rolled over the wood. She was already halfway over the stile when I caught her sleeve. 'Wait. That's the bell from the top field, and it's not one of ours.'

The bracken along the wall had gone to rust and curled itself into the same tight loops Mam used to stitch into the corners of our tea towels. We followed the bell past the holly and down to where the beck goes under the road, and found the old ewe caught in a snarl of barbed wire, her fleece hanging in ribbons. Ada knelt in the wet and talked to her the way Mam talked to us when we were small and stupid, while I held the lantern steady and tried not to think about the wire.

When the ewe was loose, Ada sat back on her heels and laughed at nothing. 'You always said the hill would swallow me one day,' she said. 'You were always going to be the one who came looking.' I didn't answer. There was nothing I could say that the fog wasn't already saying for us.

We led the flock home with the bell between us. At the stile I took out my penknife and cut two letters into the post, then a small heart under them, looped the way Mam had sewn it. Ada traced the grooves with her thumb and said the rain would take a decade to read them, which was exactly what we wanted.
