Heartbeat line tattoo on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a single continuous black line shaped like a heart rate trace, with sharp peaks and troughs that rise and fall across the skin. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill. The ink is a single dark tone on light skin, and the design sits diagonally across the shoulder area with a plain dark background.

Dear Marguerite,

I found the stethoscope you left in the staff room cupboard behind the saline bags, so you can stop pretending you lost it on purpose. The night sister says the new monitor on bed six has been throwing up nonsense all week, flatlining for half a second whenever the old man turns over, then climbing back like it has changed its mind. Nobody believes me when I say it looks like a mountain range drawn by someone in a hurry. I have taped a printout to the fridge in the nurses' kitchen with the peaks circled in red biro.
The ward at four in the morning is a kind of weather. The corridor lights hum at a pitch I can hear through my shoes. Mrs Akinyemi in bay three asks me every hour whether the city has gone quiet yet, and I tell her it has, because she likes to hear it. Down on the estate the lifts only work when they feel like it, so I climb the eleven flights to the flat with the fire door propped open, and I count the landings the way I used to count your breaths when you had that fever in March.
You always said a line on a screen is only a rumour about a body. Well, I went to the tattooist on Pembroke Road on my day off, and I asked him to draw one for me, the real one, the trace from the night you went quiet on the trolley and came back. He did it in one unbroken stroke across my shoulder, and it stings like nothing else I have felt. I keep touching it at the bus stop. Come round Sunday and tell me I am being daft.
Love, Ruth
