Heartbeat line tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black line forms a heartbeat or ECG-style trace, with a tall central spike and a smaller peak before it, running diagonally across the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the ink is a dark grey-black against pale skin. The background is out of focus, with a glass surface and a dark object at the edge of the frame.

The monitor above bed nine had been drawing the same green peak for six hours, and Bronagh Teale knew its rhythm better than her own sister's voice. Tonight the line hiccupped. A small rise, then the big spike, then the long flat run to the edge of the screen, and she found herself counting the gaps the way her gran used to count rosary beads.

The old man in nine had come in from the fishing boats at Ardglass with a cracked rib and a grin he would not let go of. He had a tattoo on the inside of his wrist that she had only noticed when they cut his sleeve away, a single black trace drawn in one thin stroke, tall spike and a small hill before it, running off across the skin like a wake behind a boat. He told her it was his wife's heart, that she had drawn it on his arm at a kitchen table in 1979 with a sewing needle and a bottle of Indian ink, and that it had never once gone flat on him.
At four the line on the screen went quiet and so did he, though his hand stayed open on the blanket. Bronagh stood with the clipboard against her chest and looked at the two lines side by side in her head, the living trace and the one on his skin, and she could not tell where one ended and the other began. She wrote the time down. Then she went to fetch his wife's cardigan from the locker, because someone had to tell her he had kept the drawing where he could see it.
