Hedgehog holding a heart balloon on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon hedgehog with wide eyes, pink cheeks and small pink paws sits curled inside a grey and black outline, gripping a string attached to a red heart balloon above its head. The shading is soft and painterly, with smooth grey and beige tones on the hedgehog and a glossy red heart with a dark highlight. The design is centred on the outer forearm, with the balloon rising towards the elbow and the skin tone and plain blue top and tiled wall visible around it.

The landlady had given up on the bread by the third day of snow, so Edith made do with cold potatoes and a jug of weak tea in the snug. Outside, the yard was a white drift up to the coal bunker, and when she went to fetch another scuttle she found a hedgehog curled in the corner, dusted with flakes, its spines tight as a fist. She carried it in on a folded tea towel and set it beside the range, where it stayed still for an hour before one black eye opened.

The boy in room four, Teddy, had come with a red heart balloon from the station stall and had been guarding it like a prize all week. When he saw the hedgehog he tied the string to a small pink paw, laughing, and the creature, rather than unrolling in alarm, gripped the string and held on. Teddy said it looked like it was going to a party. Edith said it looked like it was going nowhere until April, and went to see about the fire.
The road was cleared on the Thursday. Teddy's father came up the lane with the van, and Teddy kissed the hedgehog on its nose and let go of the string. The balloon lifted, bobbed past the beams, and drifted out through the open door into a sky the colour of pewter. Edith carried the hedgehog out to the hawthorn by the wall and set it down in the leaf litter, where it turned three slow circles and vanished.
In April, when the hedge was green and the first frogs were loud in the ditch, she found a scrap of red foil snagged on the lowest branch, its string trailing into the grass. Under it, the hedgehog was awake and busy with a beetle, as if it had only stepped out for a moment.
