You will not believe what happened at Gull Rest this week. Mrs Tregaskis has pinned a notice in the hall forbidding fighting on the stairs, and it is entirely the fault of the two girls in room four. One of them carries a white cat with a pink bow everywhere, stitched onto a little purse, and the other keeps a tin of hair ribbons in her coat pocket and looks ready to knock the teeth out of anyone who laughs at the cat. Mrs T says they are too old for it. I say a cat is never too old.

Then the fog came in on Tuesday and the lights at the pier went out. Everyone sat in the parlour with the gas lamp turned low, and Dilys, the cat's owner, started telling ghost stories about a lighthouse keeper's wife who painted hearts on every window so her husband could find his way home. Nobody was frightened until the back door banged. It was only the wind, but Ruth stood up with her fists clenched as if she meant to fight the weather itself, and we all cheered her like a hero from the pictures.

By morning the fog had lifted and the sea lay flat and bright. Ruth had left a pressed white flower on my pillow with a note tucked under it: For the one who never screams. I have kept it in my missal. Come in July, if Mrs T lets you have room four. Bring your own ribbons.
