Mrs Ivy Pennock had one rule for the Sunny Shore boarding house: nobody touched the china cat on the hall mantelpiece. It wore a pink bow the size of a biscuit tin and had watched every lodger come and go since 1961 with its painted, unbothered face.

So when the cat went missing on the Tuesday of the August fair, Ivy searched the house like a bailiff. Young Peter Gaunt had icing on his collar and a yellow rubber duckling in his coat pocket. A little handbag, stuffed with pressed flowers, turned up under the piano. The bow was still nowhere to be found, and neither was the cat.

She found the boy on the breakwater at dusk, dangling his plimsolls over the wet stones. He said the cat had asked him to take it to the sea, because it was tired of being polite to people who never once asked its name. Ivy sat down beside him in her good cardigan and said nothing for a long while, which was how she had always got the truth out of anyone.

Then the cat was lying on the stones between them, bow askew, and the tide came sliding up over the step with a soft clack of china. Peter reached out. Ivy caught his sleeve. "Let it go, love," she said. "It never liked the mantelpiece anyway."
