Hello Kitty as Batman and Robin design
Black and grey · Flash
Two cartoon cat characters with bows stand side by side in bold black silhouette, one in a Batman-style cowl and cape with a bat emblem, the other in a Robin-style costume with a red R-style emblem drawn as an outline. The linework is solid and graphic with simple white detailing on the costumes. The background is a fine stippled dot texture, and the design is in black and white only.

The bat signal went up over the hedge at ten past seven, which is to say Mrs Ostrander's tabby knocked a flowerpot off the potting bench and I had to pretend it was the Commissioner. My partner Kit took it seriously. She always does. She tightened her bow, flattened her ears under the cowl and stepped over the watering can as though it were a gargoyle.

The trouble that night was the runner beans. Someone had been taking them from the far end of Elm Row, one pod at a time, leaving the stalks stripped and bent like broken umbrellas. Kit had a theory involving a magpie she called the Alderman. I had a theory involving the hedgehog, but nobody listens to the sidekick, and I have the cape to prove it: the lining is still damp from a sprinkler I was forced to hide behind on Tuesday.
We found the thief in the cold frame. It was not the Alderman. It was a very thin hedgehog with a mouth full of beans and an expression of enormous guilt. Kit landed beside it with a thud, tangled her cape in the bamboo canes and went over backwards into the compost. I pulled her out by one ear. She did not say thank you. She said, with great dignity, "Robin, the torch."
Afterwards we sat on the step and split the last pod three ways, the hedgehog included. Kit's bow had come loose, so I retied it while the cape dried on the railings. She let me, which is how I knew she was pleased. Some nights the garden is just a garden. Some nights the sidekick gets to hold the torch.
