The mill cats had been fed on the rent money for three winters, and still the miller's daughter Ada would not let them near the grain loft. So when the grey-white cat with the black ribbon came up the lane at dusk, she did not stop to ask its business. She only watched how it sat down on the cobbles, licked one paw, and looked at the loft door as though it already owned the key.

Its name, it said with a yawn, was Mab, and it had come from the kingdom of Lessary, where the old king kept his tithe in iron chests and his cats in silver collars. Mab wore a bow of grey silk behind one ear, and pinned to the bow was a little black skull that rattled when it turned its head. At its hip hung a braided whip with a looped handle, which it used, Ada noticed, mostly to flick dust off the windowsill. The mice in the loft, Mab said, were the king's tithe, and the king was owed them by Michaelmas.

Ada asked what the cat wanted in return. Mab named the iron chest in the mill's cellar, the one her father had buried under the flour sacks and never once opened. Ada said she would fetch the key if the mice were gone by morning. Mab said that was fair, and went up the loft ladder without another word.

At first light the loft was silent. Ada climbed up and found no mice, no droppings, and no cat, only a grey bow lying on the sill with its little skull turned toward the cellar stairs. When she went down, the chest was already open, and the king's tithe had been paid in full, though nobody in Lessary ever said by whom.
