Hello Kitty mermaid on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Hello Kitty character is drawn as a mermaid with flowing red hair, a purple bow and a green scaled tail. Blue bubbles and a large blue bow with pale highlights surround her. Bold black outlines and saturated colour give the design a cartoon look, shown on the skin of the thigh.

Sit down, the kettle's not boiled yet, and you'll hear this properly with your hands round a cup. Forty winters I've kept this lamp, and only one of them ever came up the ladder on her own with a bow the size of a rowing boat on her head.

She was a small white cat, round as a dumpling, with a yellow nose like a dropped lemon drop and no mouth at all, which is why she never had to argue with anybody. The fishermen called her Miss Tuesday because she came in on Tuesdays with the tide. She wore a purple bow on one ear and a bigger blue one on her back, and she swam out past the breakwater as if the sea had been waiting for her specially.

One March the lamp went dark. The oil had frozen in the pipe, and the Hartley boat was out in the fog with three men and a sack of crab pots. I went down to the rocks with a torch and a bad temper, and there she was, sat on the wet stone with a green tail curled under her like a fern. She looked at my torch, then at the sea, then at me, and she said nothing, because she had no mouth to say it with. She just flicked her tail and dived.

Bubbles came up round the rocks, a whole string of them, each one glowing blue where the torchlight caught it. I thawed the pipe with a kettle and a prayer. When I looked down again the bubbles had gone and so had she, but the Hartley boat came in at dawn, and the lamp was burning steady.

Some nights I still go down to the rocks and count the bubbles. There are never fewer than three. Eat your bread now, and mind the stairs.
