Hello Kitty mermaid on an upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A bold black outline draws Hello Kitty with a red bow, holding a seashell and with a mermaid tail that fades from orange through green to purple. The linework is heavy and even, with soft red shading behind the head and tail. The tattoo sits centrally on a close crop of the skin, with a plain white surface and a plastic sheet visible in the background.

By February the oil at Sallow Point was nearly gone, and Maud Penhallow was the only one left to climb the hundred and twelve steps and trim the wick. Her father had gone out after the herring in October and not come back. The white cat came up the rocks in the first gale, dry as a bone, a red ribbon knotted at one ear, and sat on the bottom step as if she had been expected.

She had a scallop shell held in her forepaws. Maud took it, and it was warm, as if it had been carried in a pocket. The cat turned and went down the slope to the shingle, and Maud followed with the lantern because nobody else was going to. At the edge of the low tide a tail lifted out of the water, orange at the fin, green through the middle, violet where it tapered to a point. A woman with kelp in her hair looked up at the lamp and said, not unkindly, "You keep it too bright."
She explained it plainly. The light called the boats home, and the boats came home, but it also called the drowned up from the deep to look for the men who had steered toward it. Her father was down there with his cap still on. If the lamp burned low on the nights the wind came from the west, the drowned would stay where they were, and the sea would give back what it had kept. Maud did not think much of the bargain, but she had the oil and the stairs and no one else to bargain with.
She dimmed the lamp that night and every night after. In spring the cap came ashore wrapped in weed, and a scallop shell waited on the bottom step, pink inside, with the cat asleep beside it.
