Henna mehndi on forearm and hand

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A forearm and hand are covered in dense henna-style mehndi with paisley, floral and scroll motifs, and a teal and green detail in the outlines and dots. The fine linework is layered with small filled areas and gives a dense, symmetrical pattern that runs from the wrist to the fingertips. The background is a soft gold bokeh, and the warm brown of the henna sits against the cooler teal accents.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the time the band reaches the second chorus, the paste you drew at the start of the evening has gone from wet green to a dull crust, and your aunt keeps telling you not to touch it. The hall is hot with bodies, and the gold lights swim over the tables like shallow water, so every paper lantern seems to shiver. Nobody else has been trusted with the paste cone tonight, but Nanima spent forty years drawing paisley on the kitchen wall in Southall, and she taught you to press slowly so the lines do not blur into each other.

The teal came later, once the brown had been left to set. You had insisted on the little pot of blue-green gel from the stall by the bus station, the one the man with the moustache swore would not run, and you dotted it into the curled edges of each petal with a cocktail stick while the dhol started up below the stage. Each dot had to sit exactly in the centre of its loop. Nanima checked them one by one, tilting her head like a jeweller, and said nothing, which from her was praise.

When the dancing spills toward the tables, a cousin's bangle catches the edge of the largest scroll and drags a teal dot into a leaf. You feel your face go hot. Nanima takes the nearest hand, turns it under the lights, and laughs, because the smudge has turned into a small bird with its tail pointing at the door.

Hours later, when the band has packed up and the lanterns have stopped turning, the stain is the colour of cinnamon and the bird is still there, flying the wrong way on purpose.
