Simpsons-style character with a pink flower

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A yellow cartoon character in a teal floral dress raises a grey cap to its head, with a pink daisy and green leaves below. Bold black outlines define the linework, and the colour is solid with some soft shading. Small pink and purple dotted hearts and speckled dots fill the space around the figure.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind came round to the north-east before Dennis had finished buttoning the frock, and he stood on the landing of the Skerry Light with the cap clamped in both hands, deciding whether the gulls would take it first or the sea. His wife had hung the dress on the washing line in April and forgotten it there, teal with pink flowers the size of saucers. The relief boat was late, the lamp wanted filling before dusk, and nobody on the rock could see him but the gulls, who were taking an unhealthy interest.

"Morning, Mr Pryce," crackled the radio, in the voice of a man in Holyhead who had never once been out here in weather. "You're to hold for the supply. Wind drops by four."

"Wind's not dropping," Dennis said. "Wind's got a hand on my hat." He tugged the brim down over his ears, which were already pink with cold and embarrassment, and went up the iron stairs one step at a time, the hem snapping around his shins like a flag that had been told off.

In the lamp room the brass rail was furred with salt, and caught in the join of two panes was a single pink daisy someone had brought up in a coat pocket months ago and never noticed. Dennis worked it free with a thumbnail, its petals bruised but whole. He looked at himself in the black glass of the lantern, a round yellow man in a flowered dress and a grey cap, and found he did not look ridiculous at all. He looked like a man who had decided something.

He pinned the daisy to the bodice and went down to meet the boat. At four o'clock it came round the point, and nobody aboard said a word about the dress, though the deckhand Cyril kept touching the peak of his own cap, as if to check it was still there.
