Sit down, sit down, the bride's cousin has the good chair and nobody leaves until I've finished. You all know Dessie Pow, who ran the bakery on Quarry Lane before his knees gave out. What you don't know is the morning he made a great ring of pink dough for the summer fair and sugared it so thick the sprinkles stood up like fur on a wet dog.

His boy Tomas, six years old and already a thief, had a habit of hiding in the cold proving cupboard. That morning Dessie turned round with his floury hand already in the tray, took a bite from the top of the ring, and the whole street heard him groan with pleasure. Crumbs tumbled down his apron and bounced off the flags like gravel. Meanwhile Tomas had squeezed himself through the hole in the middle of the ring, and there he stuck, head poking out of the bun like a cork from a bottle, shouting that it was his turn.
Dessie didn't stop chewing. He hooked one arm round the boy's middle, kept the bun in his other fist, and they argued about who was the bigger fool all the way down to the fair. Every stallholder took a side. The vicar bet a shilling on the boy.
Dessie still swears that Tomas grinned at him the whole way from that hole, and the cake, for the record, was never found.
