Lisa Simpson as Wonder Woman with a flower

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Lisa Simpson in a Wonder Woman costume holds a lasso, centred in an oval frame edged with a thick rope outline. Bold black outlines and flat fills sit against a pale blue sky, clouds and a rainbow-like arc, with a pink flower with green leaves below. The image is a close, straight-on photo of healed or fresh skin with bright, saturated ink.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the dust on that step, it's been there since the big wind of '62. The girl I'm telling you about had a skipping rope, a bad temper and a cardigan the colour of mustard, and that was the sum of her inheritance. Nobody in Dry Creek expected much, least of all her.

Then the clouds came rolling off the far ridge and swallowed the whole valley, and the sun went out like a match in a bucket. Ada Pruitt, eleven years old and fed up with it, cut the skipping rope in two, stitched a star-spangled belt from a tea towel and climbed onto the roof of the filling station. She looped her lasso around the rainbow that had come up behind the cloud bank, meaning to haul the sun back down by the scruff of its neck.

The rainbow didn't care for it. It bent like wet rope in the wind and flicked her clean off the roof into a bush of creosote, where she sat with her hair full of seeds and asked the nearest cloud, very politely, what it wanted. The cloud told her nothing she didn't already know, which was that she was late for her tea and her mother was standing in the doorway with a wooden spoon.

So she went home, and the sun came up by itself the next morning, as it always does. The only thing Ada brought back was a pink flower she'd pulled from the verge, and if you drive the old road past the salt flats you'll still see one growing out of the gravel where nothing else will.
