The well at the edge of Harrow Wood had no rope left by the time Mercy Teague came to it, only the two oak bars her grandfather had laid across the gap years before, slanting down from the lip to the stones. Nobody drew water there any more. The village said the water had gone bitter, though Mercy had never tasted it.

Her brother Tom had gone into the trees after a lamb in the first cold week of the year and not come out. The men had walked the rides until their boots split. On the fourth night Mercy took the lantern and went to the well, because her grandmother always said the moon sat in the bottom of it when the rest of the world had gone dark, and a moon could show you the way down to anything lost.
She set the lantern on the bars and looked. The water was black and flat, and in it the moon sat in a ring of its own light, small and steady, just above the curve of the stones. She put one foot on the first bar and then the other, and walked the slope down as her grandfather had shown her, not looking at her feet, only at the ring of light.
At the bottom there was no water, only dry leaves and a path going off between the trunks. Tom was sitting on a root with the lamb across his knees, as if he had been waiting for someone to come and ask the way home. 'The moon told me you would come,' he said. 'It said to keep to the light.'
They climbed the bars together, and the moon stayed where it was, patient in the stone, until the lantern was the only light they needed.
