The big top has been sold off in pieces since the spring, and tonight there is only the rigging left standing over the field outside Thetford. You sit on an upturned crate with the tent poles creaking above you and count the ropes the way your mother taught you, one for each hour the act was supposed to last. Ninety, once. Now the wolf is all that remains of the Halloran Brothers' Wonder Show, and the wolf is old, grey at the muzzle, and will not stop staring at the moon through the torn canvas.

You were meant to be the one who drew the ring, not the one who tends the animals. Still, the old man left you his pencils and his folded map of the geometry he swore would hold a crowd. Star inside a star, he said, and a circle of lines that never quite meets, so the eye keeps chasing the edge. You laughed at him. Last night, with the lamp hissing, you drew it on the back of a handbill and found the lines did exactly what he promised.

When the wolf lifts its head to howl, the sound rolls across the empty field and comes back off the lorry doors. Somewhere in the dark a farmer's dog answers, then a second, then a whole village of them. You fold the handbill into your coat, pick up the lamp, and walk out past the dead flags with the wolf padding after you, its breath gone white in the cold.
