Hufflepuff crest with badger on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A badger stands in the centre of a crest framed by curling yellow and gold scrollwork, with a blue gemstone set at the top. A pale green banner across the bottom reads HUFFLEPUFF in black lettering. The outlines are bold and the badger is shaded in greys, while the gold and blue give the piece strong colour.

Dear Mum, you will never guess what came up the gangway at Falmouth this morning. Not a crate of pilchards, not a new deckhand, but a badger in a laundry basket, snuffling at the coal bunker as if he had paid his fare. We called him Thomas, after nobody in particular, and by the second night he had claimed the galley as his own. He sits beside the range with his grey and white coat catching the lamplight, watching the stockpot like a sergeant watching recruits. When the big sea came over the bow and sent a tray of plates skating across the deck, it was Thomas who went after the broken crockery, dragging each shard back to the scullery one at a time as if it were the ship's silver.
The men grumbled that a badger was bad luck aboard. Then in the Bay, when young Harker went over the side during the squall, it was Thomas who would not leave the rail. He stood on his hind legs, growling at the black water, until we hauled Harker back, half drowned and cursing us all. Nobody has mocked the badger since. Harker now gives him the first cut of every meal, and the rest of us have stopped pretending we do not notice.
We reach Bristol on Thursday. The agent says there is a sanctuary near Bath that takes strays, and I have written to them, but I think I may be the one who cannot let go. Save me a chair by the fire, and tell the kettle I am coming home. Your loving daughter, Edie.
