Mrs Pilling had sold tickets at the little hatch on Wendle Halt for thirty-one years, and she knew every regular by the sound of their coins. So when a lad in a grey jacket and a maroon bow tie stepped up one wet Tuesday, counted out his change in pennies, and asked for a single to Ashby Cross, she did not ask why he was dressed for a wedding at eight in the morning.

He came back the next Tuesday, and the one after that, always with a single to Ashby Cross and a question about the 7.12 that she could have answered in her sleep. Pip Rowlands, who worked the signal box, said he was sweet on the girl with the green umbrella who boarded at the far end of the platform. Mrs Pilling said that was none of their business, then watched him through the glass with more interest than she had felt since the Coronation.

On the third Tuesday in March he waited on the platform with a paper cone of sherbet lemons until the girl stepped off the train, looking for the bus. He held out the cone. Then, because nerves had got the better of him, he said choo choo instead of anything sensible, and she laughed so loudly that the guard looked round.

"Choo choo," she said back, and took a sherbet lemon. "Is that a proposal?"

"It's the best I've got," he said. Mrs Pilling stamped the next ticket twice, which was against regulations, and put the spare penny in the tin for the shelter roof.
