Ice cream, hot air balloon and shell tattoos

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

The collage shows three colour tattoos. The largest is an ice cream cone with a cat-faced scoop topped by a cherry, a pink scoop with gem shapes, a bow and a red heart on a cross-hatched waffle cone, all in bold black outlines. The upper right tattoo is a hot air balloon filled with a starry galaxy pattern, with bunting, a small heart on the basket and a trailing line, while the lower right tattoo shows two teal and pink shells linked by a chain of beads with soft shading.

The fleet came round the breakwater at half five, and by the time the first hull bumped the quay, Nell had the hatch open and the freezer humming. She had the cat scoop on the back shelf, lilac and mint swirled like sugar in a cup, with a cherry balanced on one ear. Nobody ordered it. The skipper's boy always asked for it anyway, because his gran had told him cats could smell weather coming.

On the morning of the storm warning the boats stayed in. Nell scooped pink for the wives on the harbour wall, the strawberry scoop she dusted with sugar crystals so they caught the light like the trinkets in the jeweller's window, shut since March. Peg Harrow sat on a bollard with her cone wrapped in a napkin and said the sea had been generous with her husband once, and then not again.

The Marigold went out at dawn the day after and came back at dusk with her nets torn and only three men on deck. The one who lifted a hand from the rail was Sol, who had never in his life bought a cone without a waffle-paper bow twisted at the top. Nell gave him the cat with no cherry. He ate it slowly, looking at the water, then asked her to make one for the empty berth, the way you would for someone late for tea.

That week she strung painted shells above the hatch, each drilled and threaded with beads, so they knocked together whenever the wind came off the water. In the morning a hot air balloon hung low over the breakwater, striped and starry and far too close to the masts, and the whole quay stopped to watch it climb past the lighthouse, slow and certain, until it was only a speck above the grey hills.
