Mickey and Minnie ice cream cones on wrists

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The left panel shows a waffle cone topped with galaxy-shaded Mickey Mouse ear scoops in pink and teal, while the right shows a cone with a pink bow and Minnie Mouse ears over a lilac scoop with sprinkles and drips. Both designs have bold black outlines and smooth colour fills, with a black star with leopard print detail beside each cone. The two photographs sit side by side, showing the tattoos on the wrist and lower forearm against a plain background.

Dear Nessa,

The rain has been coming sideways down the market since Tuesday, and Mr Okonjo has been selling cones under a tarpaulin that drums like a snare. You'll laugh, but he's taken to naming the flavours after the weather. Galaxy is the one nobody can resist, pink and teal scoops with glitter folded through, and he swears the sprinkles fall off the lilac one on purpose so the kids have something to chase.

Yesterday a girl of about seven stood at the stall with a coin in one fist and a paper umbrella in the other, refusing to leave until she had decided between the two cones. I told her the lilac one had a bow on top, which seemed to settle it. She wanted the bow. Her father wanted the sky-coloured one because it was the first thing he had seen when he came in from the car park. They argued the whole way down the aisle, and I never found out who won.

Anyway, I finally sold the last of the waffle cones to a man who said he'd been coming to this pitch since his dad sold ices here in the sixties. He paid in coins that smelled of the river. I told him the cones were stale by six. He said that was exactly why he liked them.

Write back soon, and bring the good umbrella when you come down in March. The drips on the lilac ones don't wait for anyone.

Love, Pippa
