Pink donut with red bow and candy hearts

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A pink frosted donut with multicoloured sprinkles wears a large red bow on its top edge, with a dark centre hole and a golden-brown outer edge. Thick black outlines and flat, solid fills give it a traditional look, and small heart-shaped candy motifs reading BOO and ULSA sit around it on the skin. The composition is centred on the donut, with bright colour dominating over the black linework.

Before the church bell, Nan Ashdown was already at the proving trays in the dark, because her grandmother had told her that a ring with no hole is only a wheel, and wheels roll off down the hill and are never seen again. She cut every dough ring with the bottom of a tin cup, dropped them one by one into the lard, and turned them with a fork until they were the colour of a fox in autumn.

When they had cooled she dipped the tops in pink sugar that Mr Pellow sent up from the mill at Thorney, and sprinkled them with coloured grains from a tin that had once held peppermints. The lamplighter's girl, Ettie, had a cough that kept her awake all winter, so each Tuesday Nan made one ring larger than the rest and tied a red ribbon into a bow on its top edge, so it would look like something a girl could be proud of carrying.

One Tuesday the ribbon ring was not on the sill. Nan went out in her apron and found the lane still grey, with a single set of small wet footprints leading uphill toward the chapel. She followed them as far as the gate, where Ettie stood with the ring held up to her face, looking through the hole at the first thin line of sun coming over the wall.

"It's the best window in the village," Ettie said, and she didn't cough once while she said it.
