Two wrists with matching fine line black tattoos: a lettered 'to' and infinity symbol with paw prints on one, and 'and beyond' with small flying birds on the other, placed on the inner wrist.

Infinity paw print and birds on matching wrists

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two inner wrists are shown side by side, each with a black tattoo that reads as one phrase split across them. On the left, the word 'to' leads into an infinity symbol with two small paw prints inside the loop; on the right, 'and beyond' is written in a joined script with three small birds rising from the end of the lettering. The linework is thin and uniform, the ink is solid black, and the plain white background keeps the focus on the skin.

Dear Tom,

The gate at the top of Hollin Lane is still hanging off its upper hinge, so I have stopped trying to fix it. Bramble went through it on Tuesday morning, nose down, after something in the bracken, and I stood at the stile calling until my voice gave out. The path up there loops, as you know. It runs along the wall, dips into the birches, and comes out again at the same gate. I walked it three times before the light went, and each time the paw prints in the mud at the gate were fresher than the last, going in and out, in and out, as if she had been searching for the place where the loop closes.

On the third round I met Mr Abbott coming down with his spaniel. He said the birds had been lifting off the top field all afternoon, a whole murmur of them, rising and wheeling and settling again in the same three oaks. He said it the way he gives the weather. I did not tell him I had heard the same thing from the far side of the wood, a clatter of wings like someone shaking out a sheet.

She came back at dusk, muddy to the elbows, tail going like a metronome, and sat on my boot as though she had only been gone ten minutes. I still do not know what she chased. I only know the gate stood open the whole time and nothing had shut it behind her.

I have left the gate off its latch. Come up when you can, and bring the good torch. We will walk the loop together and see where it ends, to infinity and beyond, as you always used to say.

Love, Ruth
