Fine line script tattoos on two wrists, reading 'to infinity' on the left and 'and beyond' on the right, in blue ink with red accents and small birds.

To infinity and beyond on two wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a line of cursive script. The left wrist reads 'to' followed by an infinity symbol, and the right reads 'and beyond' in blue, with the final letters and a small bird outline in red. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the ink.

Dear Ada,

The Lark is tied up below Hythe Bridge and the lock-keeper has finally stopped asking when Dad is coming back to take the tiller. I told him Sunday. I have told everyone Sunday since March. Mum says I should write to you properly instead of shouting across the cut, so this is me being proper, with the kettle on and coal dust on my cuffs.

You will laugh, but I went to the little shop in Banbury on Thursday, the one with the swallow painted in the window, and had our line finished. You remember what we argued about that winter in the cabin, whether the boat was a forever thing or just a thing we happened to be living in. The man drew it for me on the back of a receipt first. To, then the sideways eight you said looked like a lock gate lying down, then and beyond running off the end in a hurry. He put a red bird at the finish, two quick strokes, the kind that cross the water at dusk. I asked for red because you always said red was for things that were leaving.

The lock-keeper's wife came out with a tin of biscuits while I was sitting on the towpath with my sleeve rolled up, pretending I wasn't wincing. She asked whether it was for a sister. I said it was for the pair of us, and she said that was the same thing as far as lock-keepers go.

I watched three swallows go under the bridge this evening and thought of you on that Liverpool ferry with your bag between your feet, going further than the cut ever goes. Write back and tell me which way the birds are flying where you are. I will keep the tiller warm until you do.

Love, Nell
