Matching infinity and beyond wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are held together, each showing a fine line script tattoo in dark ink. The left reads 'to' followed by an infinity symbol with small dots, and the right reads 'and beyond' with two small birds above the letters. The thin, even linework is set against a soft, blurred green background.

The stormy petrels follow the stern all day, grey as wet slate, dipping their feet into our wake. Halloran says they are the souls of drowned sailors, and I said that was poor company, and he laughed and said the cook would have them in the pot if they were not so bony. I have started counting them at each change of watch. Eleven this morning. The little ones with the white rumps are the ones I would like you to see.
Last night Davey, the ship's boy, who is nine and still cannot tie a bowline, asked me where a line goes when it never ends. I said it goes round the world and comes back to where it started, which is what Father told me about the river. He said that was not what he meant, that was just being lost. I think he is right. Halloran says the only way round the Horn is to keep the bow pointed at something you cannot quite reach, so I have decided to keep my eyes on the horizon and let the rest of it sort itself out.
When we reach Valparaiso I will write again, and if the postmaster is honest this letter will have a stamp on it by June. Tell Mother I am keeping my promise about the wedding, and that the birds are keeping me company. Your loving brother, Tom.
