Infinity symbol on the hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small infinity symbol tattoo on the skin of a hand, with the thumb edge visible at the top left. The symbol is drawn in a thin, single continuous line and has faded to a pale, pinkish tone against the light skin. The image is cropped tightly around the tattoo, which sits near the centre of the frame with plain skin around it.

Dear Joan, the espalier wall is finally up, though Dad would have grumbled at my crooked top wire. I keep meaning to tell you what I found when I was clearing the shed. Under the potting bench, in a biscuit tin, was the copper wire he used to tie in the pear whips. He never cut a length without twisting it into a figure of eight first. When I asked him why, he said it was so the tie never had an end, and that he'd done the first one the spring you were born.

I went out to the old pear by the water butt to see if the wire was still there. It is. The tree has grown right round the lowest loop, so the bark has swallowed one curve and the other still shows, gone a soft pinkish brown with forty winters of rain. I stood there with my secateurs in my hand for a good ten minutes, not wanting to cut anything.

The pear is bearing better than it has in years. Mrs Okafor from number nine says that's the wire's doing, and I'm too stubborn to argue with her. I've left the rest of the old ties alone on the south wall, one uncut figure of eight at the height Dad liked, so you can see it when you come up at Easter.

Bring the good gloves. The rhubarb wants splitting, and I want you to tell me again which of us he loved best.

Your loving sister, Margaret
