Paw print outline on inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small paw print made of four toe pads and a larger main pad is drawn as a single thin outline on the inner wrist. The linework is even and unshaded, and the ink appears pale, close to white, against the skin. The fingers with silver and black-and-white striped nails sit at the top of the frame, with a teal fabric at the left edge.

The paving slabs on the back step of Gull Rise were laid the week after the storm, and the first thing anyone did on them was step in the wet. Maud Tennant saw the print from the scullery window: four toes and a heavy pad pressed into the mortar by a dog that had no business being out on a Tuesday. She didn't scold anyone. She fetched the tin of white gloss from under the sink and went out with a fine brush.

By the time the lodgers were up, the outline was dry and bright against the grey, as if someone had drawn round a ghost. Mr Pryce from room four stopped on the step with his tea and asked whether it was one of the Dorsey boys' spaniels. Maud said it was Bramble, who had been gone eleven years, and watched him decide not to ask anything else. He was a sensible man. He stepped over it carefully and went off to the pier with his collar up.
The house had always had dogs in it, back when the boarding trade meant families with buckets and wet towels. Bramble had slept under the hall stairs and waited at the gate for the post. When the last guest left for good and the place was hers alone, Maud kept the step painted, because a paw in cement is the only thing a dog ever leaves that you can keep.
On the first morning of August she came down early and found a second print beside the white one, fresh and dark, with the small marks of a terrier's claws at the front. The tide was out and the gulls were arguing over the bins. Maud stood a long time in her slippers, then went back inside for the kettle and left the new one alone.
