Tom never could leave a gate shut properly, and the grey mare knew it. Every morning she went out through the open one, round the top paddock past the old ash, down to the brook and back up again, and every morning she stopped dead at the gate and blew through her nose as if someone had asked her a question she was too proud to answer.

The vet called it a habit, the sort a horse picks up when it has been kept too tight for too long. Nell let him say it. She had been married to a farrier for thirty-one years and knew that a man who spends his days bending iron to fit a hoof does not care to be fenced in himself. He used to say the loop was the only shape that never ran out. He used to say a lot of things, most of them about horses.

After the funeral she walked the circuit herself, slowly, with her bad hip and a bucket of oats. Halfway round, where the brook bends under the ash, she found a horseshoe nail driven into the bark at the height of a man's shoulder, and beside it, cut small with his knife, the word LOVE, the letters running into one another like the loops of a rope. Nobody else had ever known he did that.

She stood there until the mare came thundering past her, ears flat, tail streaming out behind like a banner. Nell did not chase her. She simply turned, put her hand on the cold bark, and waited for the horse to come round again, which she did, every time, back to the gate.
