Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line infinity symbol wraps around the words 'I feel infinite' in flowing cursive script, with the lettering running through the loops. The linework is thin and even, in a dark blue-black ink with no shading, and the photo is taken straight on against plain pale skin. Dark fabric and a hand with blue nail polish appear at the top edge of the frame.

The ferryman on Scarrow had one rule for the children who crossed with him: never count the waves. They counted anyway. The mainland was a line of grey stone. The island was a loop of green that never seemed to end, because the path round it ran back into itself at the north cairn, and you could walk it a hundred times and find the same stile, the same sheep with the torn ear, the same woman at the well who asked after your mother as if she had not asked yesterday. Her uncle said this was why the island was called Scarrow, after the old word for a thing that goes on. Mairi thought it was because the island was stubborn.

On the last crossing before the autumn gales, she asked the ferryman what happened to a person who walked the loop and did not stop. He took his time answering, the way he did with anything that mattered. He said that they felt infinite, which was the same as being whole, and that the sea was kind to people who felt that way and let them go wherever they liked. Then he turned the boat into the swell, and she watched the cairn sink behind them, and for the first time she did not count the waves at all.
