Infinity symbol with initials and heart on upper back

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A fine line infinity symbol loops around two script initials, with a small solid red heart between them. The linework is thin and even in dark ink, with the red heart providing the only colour. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper back, photographed close up against soft, warm-toned skin.

The loop was the hard part, Ruth told the lad who asked how long it took. The letters were easy enough. She had lettered the transoms of every boat in Porthmellin harbour since she was nineteen, gold leaf on black, scrollwork that made tourists photograph the stern. But the figure of eight had to run in one stroke without lifting the brush, and it had to close exactly where it began, or the eye would find the seam and never stop finding it.

Ned Pascoe came to the hatch on a Tuesday with a paper napkin folded soft in his jacket pocket. On it, in pencil, were two initials and the sign for infinity, drawn by his wife Maud in the last winter she could still hold a pencil steady. Between the letters someone had pressed a small heart with a lipstick the colour of boiled sweets. Can you do it so it doesn't look like a mistake, he asked. Ruth said she could do it on a boat. He said the boat wasn't the point.

She practised for three evenings on offcuts of ply. The loops came out lopsided, then fat, then thin as a hair, and she binned each one into the drum behind the shop. On the fourth night the curve ran true, and she sat back with the brush dripping and the napkin, which Ned had left with her, propped against the jar of thinners.

He came for the board on Friday and ran his thumb along the finished curve without speaking. Then he asked for the heart a shade brighter, and she mixed it until it matched the napkin's faded pink. He counted out his money in coins on the bench and walked off down the quay with the paint still tacky, the two letters joined forever by a line that never once lifted. Ruth watched until he turned behind the net loft, and only then noticed she had been holding her breath, as if a breath might spoil it.
