Fine line black infinity symbol with swirls, the word love in script and five small stars, tattooed on the upper chest near the collarbone.

Infinity symbol with love and stars on chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A black infinity symbol with curling swirls runs across the upper chest. The word love is written in a thin script on the left loop, and five small solid stars sit along the right swirl. The linework is fine and even, with no colour, and the image is a close crop of pale skin with a mole visible beside the tattoo.

Dear Ray,

The Palais was packed again on Saturday, and Mr Cole had the band playing that slow number you hate, the one with the trumpet that goes on for ever. I danced it with Sheila's brother, who trod on my good shoes twice and apologised three times, so I've decided he's forgiven. I kept my eyes on the skylight the whole time. Someone painted it blue for the coronation and the paint has worn thin in patches, so the stars show through in five little pricks above the bandstand.

I counted them for you, the way you asked me to count things while you're away. Five stars, and every one of them a dance I owe you. You said once that a promise with no end is the only kind worth making, and I thought you were showing off, but I've been turning it over since. Sheila says I'm soft. Maybe I am.

Afterwards I walked home along the canal and drew the sign on the back of my hand with the pen from the post office, the lazy eight that never closes. It smudged before I reached the bridge. So I'm writing it here instead, on the good paper, where the ink can't wash off in the rain.

Come home in the spring and we'll owe each other nothing at all.

Yours always, Dot
