Love script between wings on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of the upper back of a woman with dark hair pulled into a ponytail, showing a tattoo of the word Love in cursive script flanked by two feathered wings. The linework is fine and dark, with soft shading in the wing feathers, and the ink appears black or grey against the skin. The tattoo sits centrally, with two small studs visible above it at the base of the neck and a plain, softly blurred background.

The lamp at Scarrow Head has been dark for three nights because the wick drank the damp, and you are the one who must climb the hundred and twelve steps with a fresh mantle buttoned inside your coat. Below, Tom Halloran waves a tea towel from the slipway as if the sea could read it. You wave back, though your hands are already stiff with the cold and the brass smells of paraffin and rain.

Your sister Nell wrote from Penzance that she would be aboard the Thursday packet. The letter is folded in your breast pocket, soft at the corners from reading. Nell has never once been on time for anything, and you have never once minded. Up in the lantern room a gull with a torn left wing lands on the rail and watches you through the glass while you trim the wick, unbothered, as if it has kept the watch longer than you have.
When the flame finally catches and climbs, you find you cannot leave the gallery bare. You take the tin of white paint from the store and a fine brush, and on the glass you lay out a looping L, then O, V, E, with a pair of wings curling out from either side of the word, feathered in quick strokes. The lamp throws the shape out across the black water in long pale bars. It is not a signal the Admiralty would recognise. It is a plain thing a person can see from a long way off.
Dawn comes up grey over the headland, and the packet noses in low and slow. On its deck a figure in a green coat lifts both arms, then drops them to shield her eyes. Nell sees the word before she sees you.
